The drachma was a silver coin from ancient Greece, widely used from the 6th century BCE onward. One of the oldest coins in the Western world, the drachma varied in weight and design depending on the city-state that issued it. Greek rulers frequently used the coin’s surface to display symbols of civic pride or depict gods and heroes.

The Kingdom of Macedonia was an ancient Greek kingdom located in the northern part of the Greek peninsula. It rose to prominence under King Philip II in the 4th century BC, who reformed its army and expanded its territory. Philip’s son, Alexander the Great, led Macedonia to its peak by conquering much of the known world, from Greece to Egypt and as far east as India. Macedonian culture and Greek language spread widely during this period, a legacy known as the Hellenistic Age. After Alexander’s death in 323 BC, his empire fractured, and Macedonia remained a major power in Greece until it was defeated by the Roman Republic. In 168 BC the kingdom was divided, and by 148 BC it was fully annexed as a Roman province.
