The Peruvian sol was a silver coin first issued in 1863 following Peru’s monetary reforms. Its obverse typically featured the national coat of arms or the reigning president’s portrait, while the reverse displayed the denomination and minting date. Composed primarily of silver, the sol played a central role in everyday commerce and trade, eventually becoming the basis for Peru’s modern currency system.

This coin was minted during Peru's 'New Motherland' era, which correlates to Augusto B. Leguía’s second presidency. Despite winning the elections of 1919, Leguía seized power through a coup that same year, calling his government the New Motherland. He had taken control of a nation that had lost territory to Chile during the War of the Pacific, and faced challenges in rebuilding both its infrastructure and national identity. Under Leguía’s government, Peru saw significant social, political, and economic changes as the country transitioned from post-independence instability to modernization. Peru’s centennial occurred during this time, and it received gifts of public architecture from many friendly nations. The 'New Motherland' concept was also tied to efforts to create a more unified national identity. However, this often came at the expense of marginalized indigenous populations, many of which revolted and were massacred. Although the era was characterized by progress in certain sectors, it was also defined by social inequality and the dominance of oligarchic rule, which set the stage for future unrest and reform movements.

This coin was graded MS 63 (Mint State 63), using the Sheldon grading scale from 1 to 70.  It was graded by the Numismatic Grading Company, the official grading service of the American Numismatic Association and the Professional Numismatists Guild.  Here is more information about the coin grade.
