After Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7th, 1941, the U.S. military put safety measures in place in the event of Japanese armed forces invading Hawaii. One scenario they wanted to mitigate was Japan gaining access to a large sum of U.S. dollars. In January of 1942, Military Governor Delos Carleton Emmonds ordered the recall of all bills in circulation in Hawaii, minus a $200 individual and $500 business cap. New bills were introduced in June of 1942 featuring easily identifiable 'HAWAII' overprints. These notes were the 1935A $1 silver certificate (the note in this listing!), Series 1934 $5 and $20 Federal Reserve Notes, and Series 1934A $5, $10, and $20 Federal Reserve Notes. If Japan invaded Hawaii, the U.S. government could easily declare these overprinted bills worthless. The Hawaii overprint notes were regularly used until 1946. Nowadays, they're a collectible item!
