The Kingdom of Brazil was part of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves. Originally a territory of the Portuguese Empire, it was elevated to equal status with Portugal in 1815 by King João VI. João had relocated to Brazil in 1808 to escape Napoleon’s invasions of Europe. The Kingdom of Brazil was characterized by political and economic shifts, including the creation of a more centralized administration and the promotion of agriculture, mining, and trade. In 1822 Dom Pedro I, King João VI's son, declared Brazil's independence from Portugal and became the first emperor of Brazil. The new Empire of Brazil lasted until the monarchy was abolished in 1889, following a military coup. This marked the transition to the modern Republic of Brazil.
